Winery #4: Dos Cabezas WineWorks

Calling all athletes, track teams & regular slow people like us:  we need you in training for team Dos Cabezas WineWorks!  Although we ran in a half marathon in Oregon this summer, our running program has taken a back seat to harvesting 60+ tons of grapes.  With the 2011 harvest season winding down, we have a running date scheduled for tomorrow to kick off our Great Arizona Grape Stomp 5k training.  We have 3 weeks to train to beat Tim Mueller of Canelo Hills.  We’re not quite ready to go after Lightning Ridge’s Ron Roncone, but perhaps one of our young recruits can take him.
Be sure to stick around for tastings after the run...we’ll pull out an extra wine or two for those of you with run bibs.  We’ve also been scheming a refueling dinner with Canela Bistro.  Stay tuned for details!

Winery #2: Canelo Hills Vineyard & Winery

At Canelo Hills Vineyard and Winery we are busy getting ready for Sonoita's second annual Great Arizona Grape Stomp. We've charted a beautiful run down  Elgin Road and through Rancho Rossa's vineyard. Tim is in training to beat last year's time. He is going to need some help, though. Are any of you younger, enthusiastic runners out there willing to join the Canelo Hills team and help set the pace for Tim?

Have your heard about the passbib program Canelo Hills is participating in? It will be a lot of fun for all you runners after the race. On race day will have our newly-released 2009 Zinfandel and 2009 Syrah on the tasting table and as usual, you will be able to visit with Winemaker Tim and Farmer Joan to see how this year's harvest is going. See you all then.

First winery profile: Callaghan Vineyards

This week we begin our series of postings from the wineries in the Sonoita-Elgin area that are joining in the Great Arizona Grape Stomp fun. They'll be in alphabetical order, and first up is one of the pioneers of our region, Callaghan Vineyards:

Stick around the finish line at Callaghan Vineyards for a special tasting of rare/new bottlings. We'll have Lisa's 2009 (Viognier/Riesling/Roussanne/Malvasia), Ann's 2010 (Grenache Blanc/Verdelho/Symphony/Marsanne/Roussanne), Wayne's Grenache 2009 and Claire's 2009 (Mourvedre/Grenache) out for sampling.

For more information on Callaghan Vineyards, visit their website.

Thumbs Up to our Shuttle Volunteers - get a ride to Sonoita!

Want a ride from your home to Sonoita on the day of the Sonoita-Elgin Grape Stomp 5K? To help us ferry runners from registration at Callaghan Vineyards to the Start line at Sonoita Hills Community Church, five local transport companies have volunteered their services: Arizona Grape Escapes, Arizona Stagecoach, Arizona Sunshine Tours, AZ Wine Tours, and Reisen Arizona Tours. Many thanks to all of you!

Most of these companies are also available for hire on the day of the race to bring participants to Sonoita and to take them around to the wineries after the race. If you're coming from Phoenix (AZ Wine Tours), Tucson (Arizona Stagecoach or Reisen Arizona) or Sierra Vista (Arizona Sunshine Tours) you can support these local businesses and save yourself the trouble of driving, so that you can put every ounce of energy into getting your best time during the race!

Small Town, Big Breakfast

What kinds of things do we do for fun in a small, rural community like Sonoita-Elgin when we're not pressing grapes? Well, we go to the Fire Department's monthly pancake breakfast, for one.

You'll have the chance to join in the local experience on the day of the Grape Stomp 5K. The Sonoita-Elgin Fire Station will serve their breakfast on October 22, and all racers and their families are invited. You can carb-load before the 5K or enjoy a hearty breakfast to reward yourself afterward. Come meet some new friends and support the Fire Department which has been working hard this fire season.
